We have sa i d that atoms come toge the r to form
human beings, but, of course, you must be wondering
how thi s can happen . F i rst , atoms come together to
form CELLS. Again, we are learning something new: So,
what is a cel l?
The bodies of al l l iving organi sms are made up of
cel ls. Even if cel ls are not as smal l as atoms, they are
sti l l very smal l and cannot be seen with the naked eye.
We can try to explain their tiny size with the fol lowing
example: If we brought together about 10,000 cel ls, we
could make up something just about the s i ze of the
head of a pin . Thi s i s why you cannot see them. But
ce l l s are the bu i l d i ng b l ocks of humans , ant s , cat s ,
roses, trees, and al l other l iving organisms around you.
You, for instance, are made up of tri l l ions of cel ls.
So, where did al l these tri l l ions of cel ls come from?
Look at your brother . He wasn’t there two years ago,
then al l of a sudden he appeared and slowly he started
to grow. How did this amazing event happen?
Your brother s tar ted out as a s i ng l e ce l l i n your
mother’s abdomen. But this single cel l was storing a lot
of important informat ion ins ide . Al l the informat ion
that has made your brother into who he is used to be
stored in this cel l : his eye colour, hair colour, height,
etc.
Then thi s ce l l grew a l i tt l e and started to di v ide .
