How big can spiders grow?
The living world
142
There are many creepy crawlies
scuttling around our planet that
are not insects. Some live on
land, others live in fresh water
or the sea. They come in all sorts
of weird and wonderful shapes.
The worm family
Segmented worms like
earthworms are simple
animals that have a
head at one end, a tail
at the other, and lots of
segmented body parts
in between. They live
on land or in water.
Arachnids
Spiders, scorpions, ticks, and mites belong
to a land-dwelling family called arachnids.
All arachnids have eight legs and two
body parts.
A tarantula has
hairs on its legs
that can cause
bad irritation.
When the
spider is
annoyed, it
flicks them out
at the enemy.
Despite their reputation, most
spiders are harmless to humans.
