quadruped, but, in the course of lengthy evolution,
developed a long-necked structure after a series of
minor mutations. On this point Darwin observes:
“It seems to me almost certain that (if the desired
process goes on for a longer period) an ordinary
hoofed quadruped might be converted into a
giraffe.”

It followed, obviously, that whosoever attempted to
offer an explanation for life and the universe had no
choice but to accept that, given the same set of
circumstances as was responsible for their origin,
the same sequence of events could certainly be
repeated. The truth is that, from a rational point of
view, a second life is as great a possibility as our
present life and this has to be admitted, no matter
who is supposed to be the creator of this universe,
no matter who He may be, He can cause the same
sequence of events to occur all over again. If we
choose to deny this, then we must need to deny the
existence of our present life as well. Once we accept
the first life, we have left ourselves no basis for the
denial of the second life.
