natural catastrophes occur with a depressing
regularity. But nowhere in this world is the
relationship between God and mankind made
plain. The question then arises as to whether we
should believe in God or not. If we do believe in
God, we must also believe in the life hereafter, for
the simple reason that we can conceive of no other
set of circumstances in which the relationship
between God and man can be made manifest.
Darwin recognised a creator for this world, but his
interpretation of life did not prove the existence of
any relationship between the creator and His
creatures. Neither did his interpretation suggest
that there was any need for a life hereafter or a day
of judgement upon which the relationship between
the Creator and His creatures would become a
reality. I fail to understand how Darwin imagined
this gap in his biological interpretation could be
filled. That there should be a God of this universe
without his having any relationship with this world
seems too extraordinary to be even conceivable.
That His Lordship over mankind may never be
revealed to us; that such a vast universe has been
created and will ultimately come to an end without
