path of the Prophet and his companions—if we had
made sacrifices in the same spirit as they—without
doubt our mammoth efforts would have yielded
positive results. It is no use deluding oneself into
thinking that one is struggling in the path of Islam,
when one’s efforts are not producing the results
which true Islamic struggle ought to ensure. One
may live in a fool’s paradise in this world; true
paradise in the next world is for those who base
their lives not on illusion and fantasy, but on reality.
DIVINE SUCCOUR
Addressing the faithful, God says in the Qur’an,
“Believers if you help God He will help you and
make you strong.”

Here the words “helping God”
mean fitting in with His scheme. God has set a
certain pattern for making things happen in this
world; He has created favourable circumstances,
which, if properly exploited, will yield favourable
results. We can fit in with His scheme by
coordinating our own efforts with this pattern. God
strengthens those who help Him in this way.
Here is an example of what happens when one fails
to do so. There was a priest, who wanted to see a
