modern times, but human confusion has not been
helped by this. In

Sullivan points out that the universe that is in the
process of discovery by science nowadays is the
most mysterious issue in the entire history of
intellectual thinking, and that although our present
knowledge of nature is much richer than in any
previous epoch, even this is insufficient because, no
matter where we turn, we are faced with
ambiguities and contradictions.
Attempts by material science to discover the secret
of life have been such pathetic failures that they
leave us with the uncomfortable thought, finally,
that it is undiscoverable by man. If the reality of life
is to remain unknown, how are we ever to function
satisfactorily as individuals and as communities?
