decided to propose marriage to

Khadijah was forty years old and a
widow with three children.
Muhammad was much younger. He
was twenty five and still unmarried
but he happily accepted her propos-
al. Not only was Khadijah a beauti-
ful woman but she was kind and
generous too. Because of her good
nature, she was called ‘
Tahirah
’,
‘The Pure One’. Muhammad knew
that she would be the perfect wife
and life partner. And he was quite
right.
The marriage was a joyful one.
They were well suited to each other
and were blessed with six children,
two boys and four girls. They were
Abdullah,
Qasim,
Zaynab,
Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthum and
Fatima. Sadly, however, both sons
died at an early age.
