10. The Prophet in Makkah

Luqman, Suwayd recited a few poems. “I have the
Qur’an,” the Prophet said, “which is far superior to
this.” He then recited a few verses of the Qur’an,
and Suwayd immediately accepted Islam. He went
back to Madinah and preached the message of
Islam to his own tribe, but they killed him.

After this, a chieftain of Madinah, Abu’l Haysar
Anas ibn Rafi’, came to Makkah. With him was a
group of youths of the Banu ‘Abd al-Ashhal tribe.
They had come to Makkah to make an alliance with
the Quraysh on behalf of the Khazraj, one of the
main tribes of Madinah who were embroiled in a
conflict with the other main tribe, the Aws. The
Prophet heard that they were in Makkah. He went
to see them and said: “Shall I tell you about
something even better than what you have come
for?” He then went on to explain to them the
meaning of belief in One God. There was a youth
among them called Ayas ibn Mu’adh, who told his
people that what the Prophet had told them was
much better than what they had come for. The
delegation, however, did not agree. “Leave us
alone,” they said, “We are here on other business.”
