God Arises
The Challenge of The Qur’an
~ 368 ~
This study thus reveals that, in the past, certain
tracts of land were not situated where they are
today; on the contrary, they were situated exactly at
places where the theory of drifting continents
would suggest. P.M. Blacket, Professor of Physics at
the Imperial College, London, writes that
measurements of Indian stones definitely show that
seventy million years ago, India was situated south
of the equator and that examination of South
African rocks reveals that the African continent split
off from the land mass at the South Pole three
hundred million years ago.
The word which is used in the Quranic verse to
describe this phenomenon of drift and dispersal is
dahw
.
It has the same connotations as the English
word ‘drift’ in, for example, “The rain water caused
the sand particles to drift away from the land.
“Such a wonderful similarity between this version,
from the remotest past, of major geological changes
and the discoveries of the present day cannot be
explained in any other way than that the Quran
springs from a Being whose knowledge far
surpasses the limitations of time and space.
