task, who goes so in fear of God that it is as if God
were standing before him in all His power and glory.
GROWING LIKE A TREE
The Qur’an refers to both the Torah and the Injil
(The Old and New Testaments) in order to describe
two qualities of the Companions. Quotations from
the Torah explain their individual qualities, while
the Injil provides illustration of their qualities as
members of their community:
Thus they are described in the Torah and in
the Gospel: like the seed which puts forth its
shoot and strengthens it, so that it rises stout
and firm upon its stalk, delighting the sowers.
Through them God seeks to enrage the
unbelievers. God has promised those of them
who will believe and do good works
forgiveness and a rich reward.

The simile is presented like this in the New
Testament:
And he said, So is the kingdom of God as if a
man should cast seed into the ground;
