AN IMPORTANT
POINT TO
REMEMBER
While parents are naturally disposed to love their
children, children are often disposed to disregard
their parents. It is for this reason, and because of the
enormous debt that an individual owes to his parents,
that the
Qur’an
has made it compulsory on the child to
treat his parents with all goodness and mercy. In par-
ticular, a person is required to be good and kind to his
mother and show gratitude to her for the trials and ago-
nies she experienced in giving birth to him; for nurtur-
ing and providing for his needs in helpless childhood
especi ally; and for being his first school in life. This is
why the noble Prophet [s] emphasized repeatedly that
a mother has the first claim on a person’s care, close-
ness and companionship.
