‘Abd al-Muttalib was especially
respected by all. After all, he was
the chief of the Quraysh. But he
was not like the other Arabs who
had drifted away from the teachings
of the Prophet Ibrahim [a]. He was
one of the
hanifs
, or pious people,
who still believed in Allah , the One
true God, with all his heart.
He was very happy to hear the
news of the birth of Aminah’s little
baby and began to think of a name
for the boy. Finally, he decided upon
Muhammad, an unusual name in
those days which means ‘often
praised’, or ‘worthy of praise’.
Many people asked him, “
Why did
you give the baby that strange
name?
” ‘Abd al-Muttalib replied,
My grandson will be praised both in
this world and in Heaven
.”
He also called him Ahmad, which
means ‘one who is highly praised’.
